Description
The carnation gall mite (Aceria dianthi) is a microscopic pest classified within the Eriophyidae family of the Trombidiformes order. Unlike spider mites, these pests are worm-like and cannot be seen with the naked eye, making them a particularly insidious threat to commercial floriculture and home gardens alike.
This mite primarily attacks plants belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family, with a strong preference for the genus Dianthus (carnations). The pests congregate in the meristematic tissues, specifically buds and leaf axils, where they disrupt normal cell growth through their feeding activities.
The biological cycle of Aceria dianthi is characterized by rapid development under warm and humid conditions. They overwinter in the crevices of buds or protected plant tissue. As temperatures rise, the mites emerge and begin feeding, quickly establishing colonies that can devastate a plant's growth pattern in a matter of weeks.
The main form of damage is the development of galls and severe malformation of the plant. Infested carnations exhibit stunted, curled leaves, twisted stems, and distorted buds. Because these symptoms mimic viral infections or nutrient deficiencies, growers often misdiagnose the problem until the mite population becomes unmanageable.
