Loquat rust mite
Aceria eriobotryae
Description
The loquat rust mite (Aceria eriobotryae) is a microscopic pest classified under the order Acariformes and the family Eriophyidae. It is a highly specialized mite that primarily colonizes loquat trees (Eriobotrya japonica), causing distinctive symptoms that impair the plant's physiological health.
This mite targets young leaves, floral buds, and developing shoots. By feeding on the epidermal cells, the mite significantly weakens the plant. In commercial orchards, heavy infestations result in stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic activity, and a decline in fruit yield quality, necessitating active management.
The life cycle begins with overwintering females hiding within bud scales or crevices on the bark. As temperatures rise in spring, the mites emerge and move to the newly expanding foliage. They begin feeding, which triggers the plant to produce a dense, felt-like growth known as erinose, providing a protected environment for their reproduction.
Damage is easily identifiable by the presence of yellowish or brownish patches of thick, felt-like hair on the underside of leaves. These patches are actually galls formed in response to the mite's saliva. Leaves often curl, become chlorotic, and may drop prematurely, especially during periods of high mite density.
- Regular inspection of young foliage for signs of felt-like patches.
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested twigs and leaves.
- Application of specialized acaricides during the early spring flush.
- Use of sulfur-based treatments to manage mite populations.
Control strategies must be implemented early in the season to prevent the mites from establishing their protective felt-like colonies. Systemic acaricides are generally more effective once the damage is visible, as they reach the feeding mites through the plant tissues. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including the preservation of natural predators, are encouraged.
