Description
The fig bud mite (Aceria ficus) is a microscopic pest classified within the order Acariformes and the family Eriophyidae. This mite is a highly specific parasite of the common fig tree (Ficus carica). Due to its extremely small size, it is invisible to the naked eye and is often identified only after significant damage to the plant has occurred.
The mite preferentially colonizes the buds, leaf axils, and developing fruit of fig trees. By feeding on the plant's sap, the mites disrupt normal physiological processes. This activity creates suitable conditions for the entry of other pathogens, including fungi and viruses, which can exacerbate the overall stress on the plant.
The life cycle of the fig bud mite is synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. They overwinter as adult females under bud scales or within bark crevices. As soon as temperatures rise and buds begin to swell in spring, the mites resume feeding and breeding. They undergo several generations per growing season, rapidly increasing their population density.
Symptoms of infestation are highly characteristic and include:
- Bud swelling or failure to open, resulting in stunted shoots.
- Leaf distortion, curling, and abnormal coloration (chlorotic mottling).
- Premature fruit drop and reduced fruit quality.
- General decline in tree vigor and reduced long-term yields.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control of Aceria ficus. Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches is the first step to reducing the source of infestation. During the growing season, timely application of acaricides is necessary to break the reproductive cycle. It is also important to maintain healthy trees through proper fertilization and watering to improve their natural resilience against pest attacks.
