Description

Systematic position: The pomegranate mite (Aceria granati) is a member of the class Arachnida, order Trombidiformes, and family Eriophyidae. These microscopic mites are highly host-specific, adapting exclusively to the anatomy and phenology of the pomegranate tree (Punica granatum).

Host plants: This pest is primarily a threat to pomegranate orchards. It selectively colonizes young buds, leaves, and developing fruit, causing economic losses by disrupting the physiological development of the tree's reproductive and vegetative organs.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Aceria granati is synchronized with the dormancy and growth stages of the pomegranate. The mites overwinter as adults within the protective crevices of the bark or deep inside dormant buds. As soon as temperatures rise in spring, the mites resume activity and begin feeding, producing multiple generations throughout the growing season.

Damage and harmfulness: Feeding activity causes the formation of galls and tissue malformations. Infested buds fail to develop into flowers or healthy shoots, often appearing stunted or chlorotic. Heavy infestations significantly reduce photosynthetic capacity and fruit set, leading to severe declines in overall orchard yields and quality.

Control measures: Effective management requires both cultural and chemical control strategies. Proper pruning and the removal of infested plant parts are essential to reduce the mite population. Chemical intervention should involve the application of appropriate acaricides during early spring, targeting the period when mites emerge from their overwintering sites, ensuring thorough coverage of the buds.
