Hibiscus gall mite

Systematic position. The hibiscus gall mite, scientifically known as Aceria hibisci, is a tiny pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae (the gall mite family) within the order Prostigmata. These microscopic arthropods are barely visible to the naked eye, requiring a microscope for accurate identification, though their presence is easily detected by the damage they cause.

Host range. The primary hosts for this pest are species of the Hibiscus genus. It is particularly notorious for damaging ornamental hibiscus, including Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. While it thrives in greenhouse environments, it can also become a significant issue in outdoor landscapes where the climate is favorable for its rapid reproduction.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Aceria hibisci is closely linked to the plant tissues it inhabits. Females lay their eggs directly within the galls or buds. Because the mites are protected inside these abnormal growths, they are shielded from many external environmental factors and even from contact pesticides, making their lifecycle a significant challenge for management.

Nature of damage. These mites feed by piercing plant cells and injecting specialized enzymes that induce the plant to form galls. These galls appear as irregular, often hairy, or cauliflower-like growths on leaves, stems, or buds. Severe infestations lead to stunted growth, distorted foliage, poor flowering, and a general decline in the overall vigor and aesthetic appeal of the hibiscus plant.

Control measures. Managing the hibiscus gall mite requires integrated pest management practices. Due to their protected feeding sites, contact insecticides are often ineffective. Recommended approaches include:

• Regular inspection of hibiscus plants for characteristic gall formations.
• Pruning and destroying infected branches to physically remove the mite population.
• Applying systemic acaricides that can penetrate plant tissues to reach the mites.
• Ensuring proper quarantine protocols for new plants to prevent the introduction of the pest into a collection.
