Description
Aceria nervisequa is a microscopic pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae (gall mites) within the order Trombidiformes. It is a highly specialized mite that targets beech trees (Fagus), primarily inducing the development of leaf galls along the veins.
The host range of this species is restricted to the genus Fagus. These mites feed on the surface cells of the leaf tissue. Their salivary secretions act as chemical stimulants that cause the host plant to produce abnormal hairy outgrowths, known as erineum or vein galls.
The biological cycle is synchronized with the beech phenology. Fertilized females overwinter in dormant buds or crevices of the bark. During spring, as leaves begin to unfold, they migrate to the undersides of the leaves to initiate feeding and colony formation, which lasts through the summer months.
The primary symptom of infestation is the presence of yellow, brown, or red felt-like patches concentrated along the leaf veins. While the damage is primarily cosmetic, severe infestations can reduce the tree's photosynthetic capacity, potentially stressing younger trees or nursery stock if left untreated.
Management strategies focus on prevention and chemical intervention when necessary. Key measures include:
- Pruning and removing infested branches to reduce the pest population density.
- Applying acaricides specifically during the bud-burst stage to target migrating females.
- Maintaining optimal tree health through proper irrigation and soil nutrition to help trees recover from heavy infestations.
