The carnation gall mite (Aceria paradianthi) is a highly specialized pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae, within the order Trombidiformes. As a microscopic organism, it focuses its life cycle exclusively on Dianthus species, making it a significant pest for both commercial flower production and ornamental gardening.
The primary damage caused by Aceria paradianthi involves the formation of galls and severe malformation of plant tissues. Infested carnations typically exhibit stunted growth, twisted leaves, and shortened internodes. The most devastating impact is observed on floral buds, which often fail to bloom or produce distorted, non-marketable flowers, resulting in total loss of ornamental value.
Regarding the biology of the mite, it is an obligate parasite that overwinters in the buds or stems of the host plant. With the onset of spring growth, the mites emerge and colonize new, developing tissues. They inject enzymatic saliva during feeding, which triggers the host plant to produce abnormal tissue structures (galls) that serve as both food and shelter for the mite colony.
