Description
The blackberry mite (Aceria plicator), also referred to in literature as Aceria essigi, belongs to the family Eriophyidae (gall mites). This microscopic arachnid is a significant pest of blackberry plantations worldwide, causing a physiological condition commonly known as "red berry disease" in cultivated berries.
The primary host plants are various cultivars of blackberry. The mite feeds on the developing drupelets of the fruit. Due to their minute size, these pests remain hidden within the berry structure, making manual inspection extremely difficult without specialized laboratory equipment.
The life cycle begins with overwintering females residing in the buds of the plant. As temperatures rise in spring, the mites move to the developing floral structures. They breed rapidly, with multiple generations overlapping throughout the growing season, which ensures a continuous source of infestation for developing fruits.
The economic damage caused by Aceria plicator is characterized by the failure of individual drupelets to mature properly. While healthy berries turn black and soften, infested drupelets remain red, hard, and sour. This uneven ripening makes the entire berry cluster unsellable and unpalatable, often leading to total loss of the harvest in untreated areas.
Effective management requires a multi-stage approach. Cultural practices such as pruning out old canes and removing debris are essential to reduce overwintering populations. Chemical control involves the use of specific acaricides; however, timing is critical, as applications must be made before the mites enter the flowers or after the harvest to prevent residue in the fruit.
