Willow gall mite

Aceria salicina

Description

The willow gall mite (Aceria salicina) belongs to the Eriophyidae family, a group of microscopic mites known for causing abnormal growth on host plants. These pests are extremely small, often appearing as tiny, worm-like creatures under high magnification, and are specialized parasites specifically associated with willow trees.

The pest primarily targets willow species (Salix). The mite's feeding activity triggers a chemical reaction within the plant tissues, leading to the formation of galls. These galls provide a protective environment for the mites to feed and reproduce, shielding them from environmental extremes and many natural predators.

The life cycle of the willow gall mite is synchronized with the growth of its host. The mites overwinter as fertilized females in bark crevices or under bud scales. As the willow foliage emerges in spring, the mites migrate to the young leaves to establish new colonies, leading to multiple generations throughout the growing season.

In terms of damage, the primary impact is the formation of leaf galls which can distort the foliage and disrupt normal photosynthetic processes. While rarely lethal to mature, healthy trees, heavy infestations can cause significant aesthetic decline, leaf yellowing, and premature drop, which can severely impact nursery stock and ornamental plantings.

Management and control of the willow gall mite involve several effective strategies:

  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested twigs and leaves to limit the spread of the mite population.
  • Application of appropriate miticides during the bud-burst stage when mites are migrating and most vulnerable to treatment.
  • Maintaining tree vigor through proper watering, mulching, and fertilization to help the host tolerate mite feeding.
  • Monitoring nursery stock for signs of early gall formation before distribution to prevent further spread.
