Grape erineum mite
Aceria wagnoni
Description
Aceria wagnoni is a species of mite belonging to the family Eriophyidae, widely recognized as a significant pest in viticulture. These mites are microscopic and specialized, typically confining their activity to Vitis species, where they cause distinct physiological and morphological changes in the host plant tissues.
The primary hosts of this mite are various cultivars of grapevines. Unlike other pests that consume entire tissues, Aceria wagnoni triggers the formation of galls, which appear as felt-like patches on the underside of the leaves. While the foliage is the primary target, severe infestations can extend to the green shoots and fruit clusters, potentially affecting fruit set and overall yield quality.
The life cycle of the mite begins in spring, as overwintering females emerge from their hibernacula under the bud scales of the grapevine. As the temperature rises, they begin to feed on the tender, expanding leaf tissue. Throughout the growing season, multiple overlapping generations are produced, allowing the population to expand rapidly during the warmer months of late spring and summer.
Damage caused by this pest is mainly aesthetic in mild cases but can be economically damaging in severe outbreaks. The felt-like galls, known as erineum, inhibit normal photosynthesis and transpiration. If the infestation is widespread, it can lead to premature leaf senescence, reduced carbohydrate storage for the next season, and a significant reduction in the vigor of the vine.
Effective management requires a proactive approach. Chemical control is most effective during the early stages of bud burst when mites are migrating and not yet protected inside the gall structures. Growers often utilize sulfur-based compounds or specific acaricides recommended for eriophyid mites. Cultural practices, such as removing heavily infested plant debris and maintaining vine health, are essential components of an integrated pest management strategy.
