Acharia fusca

Acharia fusca is a species of moth belonging to the family Limacodidae, often referred to as slug moths due to the unique appearance of their larvae. These insects are classified as pests because their larval stage feeds extensively on the foliage of various broad-leaved trees, shrubs, and occasional agricultural crops.

The host range for Acharia fusca includes diverse plant species, which they utilize for both nutrition and egg-laying. By consuming leaves, the larvae reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, which can stunt growth, weaken the host, and increase susceptibility to secondary infections or environmental stressors.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the slug-like larvae undergo several instars. The pupation phase typically occurs within a durable, spherical cocoon attached to twigs or branches, which provides protection from predators and environmental fluctuations during the dormant season.

Larval feeding patterns are distinct and destructive. Early instars typically skeletonize the leaves by consuming the soft tissues between the veins. Older larvae consume the entire leaf lamina, often leaving only the primary vein structure intact. A notable biological feature is the presence of urticating (stinging) hairs on the larvae, which serve as a defense mechanism and can cause skin irritation in humans upon contact.

Management of Acharia fusca involves integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Biological control using pathogens like Bacillus thuringiensis has proven effective against young larvae. Cultural practices, such as pruning and destroying branches containing cocoons during winter months, can significantly reduce the overwintering population. In severe infestations, registered contact or systemic insecticides may be applied to target active larvae.
