Death's-head hawkmoth
Acherontia
Description
The Death's-head hawkmoth (Acherontia) is a large moth species belonging to the family Sphingidae, order Lepidoptera. It is widely recognized for the distinctive skull-shaped pattern on its thorax. These insects are known for their migratory behavior and their ability to emit a high-pitched squeak when threatened, a trait unique among moths.
The pest stage of this insect is the larva, or caterpillar, which grows to a significant size and consumes large amounts of plant tissue. Its life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, where the pupa stage typically occurs in underground cells. The timing of generations is highly dependent on ambient temperatures, with populations in warmer regions exhibiting multiple cycles per year.
The primary hosts of this pest are plants within the Solanaceae family. Economically important crops affected include potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and tobacco. While the moths themselves feed on plant sap and nectar, the larvae are voracious leaf-eaters that can rapidly defoliate host plants if present in high densities.
Damage caused by larvae involves heavy defoliation, which severely impacts the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis. This reduction in energy production leads to stunted growth, reduced fruit or tuber development, and overall loss of yield. While rarely considered a widespread agricultural disaster, their localized presence can lead to significant aesthetic and production damage.
Effective management and protection strategies are essential for reducing damage in commercial fields. Standard practices include:
- Regular field scouting to identify early larval stages before they cause severe damage.
- Manual removal of larvae where infestation levels are low.
- Post-harvest soil cultivation (tilling) to expose and destroy pupae residing in the ground.
- Application of biological control agents or chemical insecticides targeted at the larval stage when thresholds are exceeded.
