Asian death's-head hawkmoth

Systematic position: Acherontia lachesis belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Sphingidae. Widely known as the Asian death's-head hawkmoth, this species is characterized by its large size and distinct skull-like pattern on the thorax. While biologically fascinating, it is recognized as a significant pest in several agricultural sectors throughout its distribution range.

Host crops: This moth is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plants. It is particularly notorious for damaging crops within the Solanaceae family, such as potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Additionally, it can cause severe economic losses in sesame and tobacco plantations when infestation levels are high.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs individually on the underside of host plant leaves. Larvae progress through five instars, feeding primarily during the night. The pupal stage typically takes place in underground chambers, where the insect remains until conditions are optimal for emergence.

Damage and harmfulness: The larval stage is responsible for the destructive feeding. Mature caterpillars are large and consume vast amounts of leaf tissue rapidly. Heavy infestations result in severe defoliation, which hampers the plant's ability to photosynthesize.
