Agrius

The genus Agrius is part of the order Lepidoptera and the family Sphingidae (hawk moths). The most notable species is Agrius convolvuli, the convolvulus hawk moth. These insects are characterized by their large size, long proboscis, and powerful flight capabilities, allowing them to migrate across large geographic areas.

These pests primarily target plants in the Convolvulaceae family, such as field bindweed. However, larvae (caterpillars) are known to feed on a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops, including sweet potatoes, tobacco, and various legumes. Damage is usually localized but can be severe in regions where populations reach high density during peak seasons.

The biological cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are laid singly on the underside of host leaves. The larvae go through five instars, exhibiting voracious feeding habits. Pupation typically occurs underground, where the insects remain in the soil as pupae, making the soil conditions a critical factor for their survival and overwintering.

Feeding damage is characterized by the consumption of large portions of leaf tissue, often leading to total defoliation of the host plant in severe cases. This destruction severely impacts the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant, resulting in stunted growth and reduced yields. In many agricultural systems, the presence of these larvae is considered an indicator of high pest pressure.
