The house cricket (Acheta domesticus) is an insect belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Gryllidae. While often associated with human dwellings, in professional agriculture, it acts as a significant pest, particularly within greenhouses and seedling nurseries where environmental conditions favor its rapid population growth throughout the year.
This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plants. It is particularly damaging to young vegetable seedlings, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. By feeding on the succulent stems and tender leaves of young plants, they can destroy entire nursery beds within a few nights, leading to significant economic losses for growers.
The life cycle of Acheta domesticus involves incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs in damp soil or organic debris. The nymphs look like miniature adults and start feeding immediately after hatching. In warm greenhouse environments, they do not undergo a true diapause, allowing for overlapping generations that can persist indefinitely.
Feeding damage is characterized by ragged, chewed leaf edges and severed stems near the soil surface. Because house crickets are nocturnal, they remain hidden during the day in crevices, under pots, or within plant debris. This behavior makes it difficult to detect an infestation until significant visual damage has already occurred, by which time the population may be quite large.
Management strategies focus on sanitation and chemical intervention. Removing debris and clutter around growing areas reduces favorable hiding spots. Baiting stations containing appropriate insecticides are often effective for controlling localized outbreaks. Maintaining proper soil moisture levels and ensuring greenhouse structural integrity to prevent entry are also critical components of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan.
