Spring field cricket

The spring field cricket (Acheta veletis) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Gryllidae. In agricultural settings, these insects are considered occasional pests, though they can cause significant localized damage to young emerging crops during the spring season.

They feed on a variety of agricultural commodities, including seedlings of cereal grains, vegetable crops, and various row crops. The primary damage occurs during the early growth stages, as crickets chew through the succulent stems of seedlings, which often leads to poor crop stands and the need for field reseeding.

The life cycle of this species typically spans one year. They generally overwinter as nymphs of various instars within the soil or beneath surface residue. As soil temperatures rise in the spring, the nymphs emerge from their overwintering sites, becoming highly active and ravenous just as farmers are planting their spring crops.

The damage caused by Acheta veletis is often characterized by cleanly severed stems at the soil surface or ragged leaf edges. Because these insects are nocturnal, they remain hidden in soil cracks or under debris during daylight hours, making direct observation difficult without careful monitoring during the night or early morning.
