Brachytrupes is a genus of large crickets belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Gryllidae. These insects are recognized as serious agricultural pests, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, where their burrowing activity and herbivory can lead to significant yield losses across various farming systems.

They damage a wide range of host plants, including staple cereals like rice and maize, as well as tobacco, legumes, and seedlings in forest nurseries. The insects typically attack the base of the stems, effectively severing young plants from their root systems, which often leads to the rapid death of the seedlings.

The biology of Brachytrupes is centered around their subterranean lifestyle. Adults and nymphs construct deep, complex burrow systems in the soil where they reside during the day. The life cycle progresses through eggs, several nymphal instars, and finally, adulthood. Moisture levels in the soil are a critical factor in determining the population density and successful egg hatching.

The damage caused by Brachytrupes is characterized by localized patches of wilting or missing plants. Because the crickets are nocturnal and emerge from their burrows to feed at night, monitoring the population size can be challenging. Without management, their burrowing can also contribute to soil destabilization and poor irrigation efficiency in affected areas.
