Beet webworm

Achyra interpunctalis

Description

Systematic position. The beet webworm (lat. Achyra interpunctalis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Crambidae. It is a highly destructive and polyphagous insect that is notorious for its periodic outbreaks, which can cause significant damage to agriculture across wide geographical areas.

Affected crops and damage. This pest feeds on over 300 plant species, posing a serious threat to sugar beet, sunflower, maize, soybeans, and various legumes. The larvae (caterpillars) are voracious feeders that skeletonize leaves by consuming the parenchyma, leaving only the main veins. High infestations can completely defoliate fields, leading to total crop failure and severe economic losses.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They overwinter as mature larvae inside silken cocoons buried in the topsoil. Pupation occurs in the spring when soil temperatures rise sufficiently. Depending on the climate, the species can produce one to three generations per year, with the emergence of moths usually correlated with specific thermal sums.

Life activity. Adult moths are primarily crepuscular or nocturnal. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the underside of host leaves or on weeds. Young larvae are particularly vulnerable, but as they grow, they become more resistant to environmental stressors. In high-density populations, the caterpillars may exhibit migratory behavior, moving in large groups to adjacent fields once the primary food source is exhausted.

Control measures. Effective management of the beet webworm requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach:

  • Deep autumn plowing to destroy overwintering sites and pupae in the soil.
  • Strict weed control to eliminate primary host plants for egg-laying and early-stage feeding.
  • Regular field monitoring using pheromone traps to predict moth flight peaks.
  • Timely application of selective insecticides when caterpillars reach the economic threshold level during early larval stages.
