Garden webworm

Achyra rantalis

Description

The garden webworm (Achyra rantalis) is a member of the Crambidae family within the order Lepidoptera. It is a highly destructive, polyphagous pest known for its capacity to cause widespread agricultural damage during population outbreaks, frequently impacting large-scale crop productions.

This species exhibits a wide host range, feeding on more than 200 different plant species. Primary host crops include soybean, corn, sugar beet, sunflower, alfalfa, and various vegetable crops. The larvae, commonly known as webworms, can devastate entire fields if left unmonitored during the early larval stages.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters as a pupa within a silk-lined cell in the soil. As temperatures rise in spring, adults emerge, mate, and lay eggs on the undersides of host plant leaves. Larvae hatch and begin feeding, protected by thin webs they spin over the leaf surface.

Larval feeding causes significant damage to foliage. Younger larvae skeletonize the leaves by consuming the tissue while leaving the veins intact. As they grow, they consume larger portions of the leaves and can even attack stems, leading to severe defoliation, stunted plant development, and substantial yield loss, especially in legumes and field crops.

Management strategies require an integrated approach involving cultural and chemical controls. Tillage practices that disturb the soil help destroy overwintering pupae. Weed management is crucial, as many weeds act as early-season hosts. When economic thresholds are reached, the application of registered insecticides during the early larval stages is the most effective way to prevent crop loss.

  • Deep plowing to destroy overwintering pupae in the soil.
  • Control of weeds along field margins and within fields.
  • Monitoring adult moth flights with pheromone traps.
  • Timely application of insecticides targeting early-instar larvae.
