Description

The western black-headed budworm (Acleris gloverana) is a significant defoliating insect belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is considered a major pest in coniferous forests, particularly within the western parts of North America, where it periodically causes extensive damage to forest stands.

This species primarily targets various species of spruce (Picea) and hemlock (Tsuga). The larvae feed on the needles and buds of these trees, with a preference for young, current-year foliage. Frequent outbreaks can lead to widespread canopy thinning and, in severe cases, the mortality of the host trees.

The life cycle of the western black-headed budworm consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are laid on the needles during late summer and remain dormant throughout the winter. Upon hatching in the spring, the larvae begin feeding. Pupation occurs within the protective structure formed by spun needles, followed by the emergence of adults to restart the cycle.

Damage is characterized by the presence of larvae-spun webs that hold needles together. As larvae consume the foliage, the needles turn brown and drop prematurely. Under heavy infestation conditions, entire trees may appear scorched. This defoliation reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the trees, leading to stunted growth, reduced timber quality, and an increased susceptibility to secondary pests.
