Vine moth
Sparganothis pilleriana
Description
The vine moth (Sparganothis pilleriana) is a significant pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is widely recognized in viticulture as a destructive species that can cause substantial economic losses by damaging various parts of the vine throughout the growing season.
Regarding its biology, the vine moth typically completes one generation per year. The larvae spend the winter as first-instar caterpillars in protective silken cocoons located deep within the bark crevices of the vine trunk or under plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge to feed voraciously on unfolding buds, developing leaves, and floral clusters.
This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants beyond grapes. Agricultural crops that may suffer damage include: winter oilseed rape, cucumber, hop, apple, plum, tomato, potato, and winter wheat. The larvae use silk threads to bind leaves together, creating a safe microhabitat that makes them harder to reach with conventional spray treatments.
The damage caused by Sparganothis pilleriana is characterized by the destruction of buds and reproductive structures. This significantly impacts the vine's physiology, leading to reduced yield and hampered vegetative growth. Early detection of larvae is crucial, as the pest can rapidly transition from a localized problem to a widespread infestation within a vineyard block.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as removing loose bark and eliminating alternative host weeds, play a vital role in reducing the overwintering population. Chemical control, when necessary, should be timed strategically during the spring emergence of larvae and before bloom, utilizing selective insecticides that minimize harm to beneficial insects while effectively targeting the moth larvae.
