Lorquin's Tortrix

Lorquin's Tortrix (Acleris lorquiniana) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. Known for its specific feeding habits, this pest is a common subject of study in entomology due to its distinct larval behavior and host plant preferences.

The species primarily targets plants within the Lythrum genus, specifically purple loosestrife. It is often found in wetland habitats, marshes, and near irrigation channels, where its preferred host plants thrive. While not always a major commercial pest, it can cause localized damage in nursery settings or areas where host plants are cultivated.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moths are typically active in late spring and summer. The overwintering phase generally takes place as an adult or pupa, seeking refuge under bark or among leaf litter to survive cold seasonal conditions before emerging to mate.

The larval stage is responsible for the direct damage caused to the plant. Caterpillars feed on leaves, using silk to roll or fold the foliage into protective cases. This behavior prevents the plant from performing adequate photosynthesis and can lead to stunted growth or premature leaf drop if the infestation levels are high enough.
