Description

The grey tortrix moth (Acleris senescens) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. As an adult, the moth exhibits a subtle, grayish appearance, which allows it to camouflage effectively against tree bark and foliage, making it difficult to detect during daylight hours in orchard environments.

This pest primarily targets fruit trees, with a strong preference for apple and pear species. Both the leaves and the developing buds are susceptible to feeding, which can hinder the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis and negatively affect its overall vigor during the growing season.

The life cycle of this species follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Overwintering typically occurs as pupae or adults in protected locations such as bark crevices or within leaf litter. Once temperatures rise in the spring, the emergence of adults coincides with the development of host foliage.

The larvae are known for their leaf-rolling behavior, where they spin silk to pull leaves into protective structures. Inside these shelters, they skeletonize the leaf tissue, which leads to stunted growth and, in severe cases, defoliation. Damage to buds and young fruit can lead to decreased yield and reduced fruit quality.
