Garden rose tortrix

The garden rose tortrix (Acleris variegana) is a moth species belonging to the family Tortricidae. It is widely distributed across Europe and parts of Asia, frequently acting as a significant pest in orchards and private gardens. Its ability to adapt to various host plants makes it a persistent challenge for horticulturists.

This insect primarily attacks plants within the Rosaceae family. Its host range includes various fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, and cherry, as well as ornamental plants like roses, hawthorn, and blackthorn. The larvae are particularly damaging, as they target the most nutritious parts of the plant, including young leaves and flower buds.

The life cycle typically involves overwintering as eggs on the bark of host trees. In the spring, larvae emerge and begin feeding immediately upon the opening of buds. As they grow, they move to the leaves, constructing shelters by spinning silk to fold or roll the foliage. The pupal stage also occurs within these rolled leaves, providing a protected environment for transformation.

Damage caused by this pest is visually distinct, characterized by leaf rolling and skeletonization. When infestations are high, the larvae can cause partial or total defoliation of shoots, which stunts the growth of young trees and significantly reduces the crop yield in fruit-bearing varieties. The presence of webbing is a clear indicator of active feeding by the larvae.

To manage and control Acleris variegana, an integrated approach is recommended. Mechanical control includes the manual removal of rolled leaves during early spring. Chemical control should be timed to coincide with the larval hatching stage when the pests are most vulnerable to contact or systemic insecticides. Additionally, encouraging natural predators like parasitic wasps can help maintain populations below the economic damage threshold.
