Oak leaf webber moth

The oak leaf webber (Acrobasis consociella) is a moth belonging to the family Pyralidae. It is considered a specialized pest primarily affecting various species of oak (Quercus). The insect is widely distributed across temperate forest regions, where it frequently damages young saplings and nursery stock.

The life cycle of this pest is univoltine, meaning it produces one generation per year. The larvae overwinter in small, white, tough cocoons located in bark crevices or near the buds. In early spring, as temperatures rise and buds begin to swell, the overwintered larvae emerge and immediately start feeding on the developing foliage.

The feeding behavior of the larvae is distinctive and destructive. They use silk webbing to draw several young leaves together, creating a webbed nest or cluster. Within these protective structures, the larvae feed on the leaf tissue, often causing skeletal damage and turning the infested leaves brown, which eventually leads to premature defoliation.

The damage caused by Acrobasis consociella can significantly impact the health of oak trees. By destroying the primary leaf tissue during the critical period of spring growth, the pest reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, which leads to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary pests, fungi, and environmental stress.
