Description
Acrobasis kearfotella is a specialized moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. As a serious pest of nut-bearing trees, it poses a significant economic threat to hazelnut and walnut plantations across its natural habitat range.
The host plants primarily include Corylus species (hazelnuts). The pest exhibits a highly specialized feeding pattern, targeting reproductive structures. By focusing on buds and developing nuts, the moth interferes directly with the tree's reproductive cycle, leading to substantial yield losses if not managed correctly.
The biological cycle of the moth typically involves overwintering as larvae in protective hibernacula located within bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds. This synchronized emergence with the host plant's phenology allows the larvae to maximize their feeding potential on the most nutritious plant parts.
Damage caused by this pest is characterized by hollowed-out nuts and withered shoots. The larvae bore into the fruit, consuming the interior and leaving behind distinctive frass.
