Description

Systematic position. Acrobasis stigmella belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is a specific type of moth known for damaging fruit tree buds during the early spring developmental stages.

Host plants. The pest primarily targets members of the Rosaceae family. Its preferred hosts include apple, pear, cherry, and plum trees. It is often found in commercial orchards, nurseries, and wild fruit patches, which serve as a secondary habitat for the population.

Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect overwinters as a young larva inside a protective hibernaculum tucked away in bark crevices. Once temperatures rise, larvae emerge and begin feeding on developing buds and leaf clusters.

Damage and harmfulness. Larvae are known for creating silk webs that bind leaves and buds together into small nests. This webbing protects them from predators and pesticides. Heavy infestations can lead to significant bud loss, resulting in stunted tree growth and drastically reduced fruit yields for the season.

Control measures. Effective management requires a combination of strategies:

  • Pruning and removing infested branches to reduce local population density.
  • Monitoring the orchard for early signs of webbed buds during the bud break stage.
  • Applying Bacillus thuringiensis or contact insecticides if the economic injury level is reached.
  • Maintaining general orchard hygiene to minimize overwintering sites for the larvae.
