Description
The oak knot-horn moth (Acrobasis sylviella) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. As a specialized herbivore, this species primarily feeds on various species of oak (Quercus). It is recognized as a significant pest in forestry and ornamental arboriculture, capable of causing localized defoliation.
The life cycle of this moth is univoltine, meaning it completes one generation per year. Larvae in early instars overwinter in silk hibernacula placed in crevices of the bark or branch forks. In the spring, when buds begin to swell, the larvae emerge to feed on the tender buds and newly developed foliage.
The larvae exhibit a distinct behavior of spinning leaves together with silk threads to create shelters or nests. Inside these silken retreats, the larvae feed safely, protected from predators and environmental stress. This feeding activity results in skeletonized or completely consumed leaf blades, which often turn brown and withered.
The damage caused by the oak knot-horn moth can significantly reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the tree. While mature, healthy trees can often withstand moderate infestations, repeated annual defoliation can weaken trees, reduce annual growth, and make them more susceptible to drought, fungal pathogens, and secondary wood-boring insects.
