The oak knot horn moth (Acrobasis tumidella) is a small moth belonging to the family Pyralidae. This species is part of the order Lepidoptera and acts as a specialized pest that feeds primarily on oak tree tissues, causing significant damage to young plantations and forest stands.

The primary food sources for the larvae are the English oak (Quercus robur) and sessile oak (Quercus petraea). The pest focuses on buds and young shoots, which leads to impaired growth, reduced overall productivity of the trees, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections and fungal diseases.

The biology of this species is closely synchronized with the phenology of oak development. The larvae overwinter as second-instar caterpillars in dense, silk-spun cocoons constructed in the forks of twigs or near the buds. In spring, as buds begin to burst, the larvae emerge to feed intensively, burrowing into the buds before moving on to the young foliage.

The damage pattern is characterized by the larvae hollowing out the buds, followed by binding the young leaves together with silk to create protective nests. This feeding behavior often causes deformation of the shoots. During outbreaks, the pest can cause premature defoliation, significantly impacting the tree's photosynthetic capacity and vigor.

Control measures encompass both silvicultural and chemical strategies. Maintaining healthy forest stands through proper management is essential for preventing outbreaks. In areas of high population density, insecticide applications are timed to coincide with larval emergence from overwintering sites.
