Description
The garlic moth (Acrolepia manganeutis) is a significant lepidopteran pest belonging to the family Plutellidae. It specializes in infesting various species of Allium, primarily targeting garlic and onions, and poses a serious threat to yields in both commercial agriculture and private vegetable gardens.
The pest primarily damages the leaves and floral stalks of Allium crops. Larvae act as leaf miners, creating translucent, irregular tunnels within the plant tissue. This feeding behavior disrupts photosynthesis, stunts plant growth, and significantly lowers the quality and marketable value of the harvested bulbs.
The biological cycle of the garlic moth involves a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters in the adult stage in sheltered areas. As temperatures rise in spring, the moths emerge to lay eggs on host plants, leading to the development of subsequent generations as the growing season progresses.
Visible damage is characterized by white streaks or blotches on the leaves, which eventually turn brown and wither. Severe infestations result in the larvae burrowing deep into the neck of the bulb. This not only weakens the plant structurally but also facilitates the entry of secondary pathogens that cause soft rot and storage degradation.
