Description
Systematic position: The diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Plutellidae. It is considered the most destructive pest of cruciferous crops globally due to its extraordinary capacity to develop resistance to almost all known classes of insecticides used in modern agriculture.
Crops damaged: This pest primarily attacks plants within the Brassicaceae family. Key host crops include cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, oilseed rape (canola), mustard, radish, and turnip. It also colonizes several weed species, which can act as a refuge for the population during off-seasons.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs singly or in small groups on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, larvae go through four instars, feeding on the leaf tissue. Pupation occurs inside a loose, silk-like cocoon attached to the plant foliage. The speed of the cycle is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple overlapping generations in warmer climates.
Damage and pest status: Damage is caused by the larval stage. Early instars create small mines in the leaf tissue, while later stages consume larger areas of the leaf, leaving only the veins behind (skeletonization). Severe infestations can cause total crop failure, stunted growth, and significant reduction in the weight and quality of the harvest, making produce unsalable.
Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Practices include crop rotation, the use of trap crops to attract moths, and the preservation of natural parasitoids. Applications of biological insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis are highly effective when applied early. For large-scale outbreaks, rotation of insecticides with different modes of action is critical to manage insecticide resistance.
