Leafcutter ants

Leafcutter ants of the genus Acromyrmex are prominent members of the family Formicidae within the order Hymenoptera. Unlike many other ants, they are dedicated fungus-growers; they harvest plant matter not to eat it directly, but to provide a nutrient-rich substrate for their symbiotic fungus, which serves as the colony's primary food source.

These pests affect a vast array of plant life, ranging from essential crops like citrus, soy, and coffee to numerous ornamental and forest species. Because of their highly coordinated foraging behavior, a single colony can defoliate and severely damage an entire plantation or garden plot in a very short period of time.

The biology and lifecycle of Acromyrmex are characterized by a caste system, where workers of different sizes perform specific duties, from scouting and foraging to gardening and waste management. A colony is founded by a single queen and can grow to include hundreds of thousands of individuals. Their underground nests are complex architectures designed to maintain specific climate conditions for the growth of their fungi.

The damage caused by these insects is distinct and destructive. They cut precise semicircular segments from leaves, flowers, and buds. For agricultural enterprises, this results in reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted plant growth, significant reduction in crop yield, and high economic losses due to the destruction of both young plants and mature trees.

Effective management and control measures for Acromyrmex include:

• Deployment of toxic baits containing slow-acting insecticides that are carried by foragers into the heart of the colony.
• Application of specialized pesticides directly to nest openings or through soil injection.
• Implementation of physical barriers, such as protective collars or sticky tapes, to prevent ants from reaching the canopy.
• Biological control methods involving the use of entomopathogenic fungi that naturally attack and weaken the colony population.
