The leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex lundii is a member of the Formicidae family within the Hymenoptera order. These ants are highly organized eusocial insects known for their complex behavior and profound impact on local ecosystems and agricultural landscapes in South America.

These pests pose a significant threat to a wide range of crops, including citrus trees, eucalyptus plantations, soybeans, corn, and various vegetables. Their ability to defoliate large areas of vegetation makes them a major concern for farmers who see their young orchards or fields destroyed rapidly.

The biology of Acromyrmex lundii is centered around their unique symbiotic relationship with the fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus. The ants do not eat the plant material they collect directly; instead, they harvest leaves to create a substrate in their underground nests for growing this fungus, which serves as their exclusive food source.

Damage is characterized by distinct, semi-circular cuts on the leaf margins. Over time, the constant harvesting of leaves leads to severe defoliation, which severely limits the plant's ability to photosynthesize, stunts its growth, and can result in the complete death of the crop if left unchecked.
