Green bug Acrosternum
Acrosternum
Description
Acrosternum is a genus of insects belonging to the Pentatomidae family, commonly known as stink bugs. These insects are significant agricultural pests distributed across various warm climate regions worldwide. They are characterized by their shield-shaped bodies and vibrant green coloration, which allows them to effectively camouflage among the foliage of host plants.
The genus is known for its wide polyphagy. Acrosternum species primarily infest vegetable crops, such as tomatoes, peppers, and beans, but they are also frequently observed on field crops and industrial plants. They tend to concentrate on developing fruits and tender stems to feed on plant sap.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Females typically lay eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Nymphs resemble miniature adults but lack fully developed wings. The developmental speed is highly dependent on ambient temperatures, with rapid proliferation observed during warm, humid seasons.
Damage is caused by the insertion of the piercing-sucking mouthparts into plant tissues. During feeding, the insects inject saliva containing enzymes that cause tissue necrosis, malformation of fruits, and premature fruit drop. Heavy infestations can lead to significant yield losses, often rendering harvested produce unsuitable for market due to visible damage.
Management and control strategies involve:
- Maintaining crop hygiene by eliminating weed hosts in and around fields.
- Monitoring pest populations using pheromone traps to time interventions.
- Applying selective insecticides when population levels exceed economic damage thresholds.
- Utilizing biological control agents, such as egg parasitoids, to reduce population growth.
