Painted bugs

Painted bugs, belonging to the genus Eurydema, are members of the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. These insects are well-known agricultural pests recognized for their distinctive, often brightly colored patterns, which act as a warning signal to predators. They are particularly active during warm, dry weather conditions.

They infest a wide range of crops, including winter rapeseed, fodder beet, soybeans, tobacco, winter wheat, grapes, and apple trees. The primary damage occurs in cruciferous crops, where both adults and nymphs pierce the plant tissues to feed on cell sap, which disrupts the plant's physiological functions and reduces crop vigor.

The life cycle typically consists of one to two generations per year. The bugs overwinter as adults in protected habitats like leaf litter, field margins, and hedgerows. As temperatures rise in spring, they migrate to host plants. Females lay eggs in distinct rows on the underside of leaves, and the nymphs undergo several molts before reaching adulthood.

Feeding damage presents as bleached, necrotic spots on leaves and stems. When the bugs feed on younger plants, the damage is often systemic, causing the leaves to wither and the growing points to die, which significantly stunts the crop's development and results in poor yield quality and biomass loss.
