The pointed cabbage bug (Aelia cognata) is a member of the Pentatomidae family, frequently observed as a significant pest of cereal crops. This insect is characterized by its elongated, pale-colored body and a distinctively pointed head, which helps it blend in with dry stems and grasses during different stages of its development.

Regarding its biology, Aelia cognata completes one generation per year. Adult bugs overwinter in leaf litter, hedgerows, or dry grasses near fields. As soon as temperatures rise in the spring, they migrate to cereal fields to feed on the sap of young plants, subsequently laying eggs once the conditions for larval development are favorable.

The primary hosts of this pest include wheat, barley, rye, and occasionally various wild grasses. Both adults and nymphs feed by piercing the plant tissues and injecting digestive enzymes. This feeding process causes severe damage to the vascular system of the stalks and significantly impacts the chemical composition of the grain during the maturation phase.

The economic impact of Aelia cognata is largely driven by its ability to decrease grain quality. Damage at the grain-filling stage results in shriveled kernels and a drastic reduction in baking quality, as the bug's saliva alters the protein structure of the flour. Under high infestation levels, the yield loss can be considerable for commercial farming operations.
