Description
The hemp rust mite (Aculops cannibicola) is a microscopic pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae. As a specialized feeder, it exclusively targets cannabis plants, posing a significant challenge to both indoor cultivation and open-field hemp production due to its rapid reproductive rate and elusive nature.
This pest colonizes the foliage, stems, and reproductive parts of the plant. By piercing the plant cells, it extracts nutrients, which inevitably weakens the physiological state of the host. Because individuals measure less than 0.2 millimeters in length, they are often undetected until clear symptoms of damage appear.
The life cycle of Aculops cannibicola is highly temperature-dependent. Females deposit eggs on the surface of the leaves, and the transition from egg to adult occurs within a few days under warm conditions. Their ability to survive in various micro-environments makes them difficult to eradicate once a population is established.
Visual damage includes leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis), and stunted growth. In severe cases, the entire plant structure becomes distorted, and the production of trichomes and fibers is significantly hampered. The plant becomes more susceptible to environmental stress and secondary pathogen infections as a result of the feeding damage.
