The fig rust mite (Aculops caricae) belongs to the order Acariformes and the family Eriophyidae. It is a microscopic mite species that specifically targets fig trees, causing significant physiological stress to the host plant and reducing overall fruit quality.

The primary host for this pest is the common fig (Ficus carica). The mites inhabit the youngest tissues, including the buds, tender leaves, and developing fruits, where they feed by piercing the plant cells and extracting the sap.

The biology of Aculops caricae is adapted to the growth cycle of the fig tree. They overwinter as adults within the bud scales or deep in the bark crevices. As the trees break dormancy in the spring, the mites migrate to the new growth to begin feeding and reproduction, often completing multiple generations within a single season.

Damage symptoms include the discoloration and curling of leaves, often showing a bronzed or rusty appearance. Fruit damage is particularly severe, resulting in distorted shapes, surface pitting, or scarring, which makes the figs unmarketable and highly susceptible to secondary infections.
