Description
Systematic position: The fuchsia gall mite (Aculops fuchsiae) belongs to the class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and the family Eriophyidae (gall mites). It is an microscopic pest that is almost invisible to the naked eye, making its early detection extremely difficult for gardeners.
Host plants: This pest is a highly host-specific parasite that exclusively attacks plants of the genus Fuchsia. While different cultivars may show varying levels of resistance, the mite poses a severe threat to commercial nurseries and private collections alike, often destroying plants entirely.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the mite occurs entirely on the host plant. Females deposit eggs in leaf axils and growing tips. Because the mite reproduces rapidly, especially in warm and humid climates, a small initial population can quickly overwhelm an entire plant, spreading easily via wind or contact with infected tools.
Nature of damage and impact: When feeding, the mite injects saliva into the plant tissues, causing abnormal cell growth. Key symptoms include:
- Severe distortion and curling of new leaves;
- Formation of reddish or brown galls (abnormal growths) on stems;
- Stunted growth and complete failure to produce flowers;
- Brittle and malformed shoots that eventually die back.
Control measures: Eradicating the fuchsia gall mite is challenging because the mites are protected inside the gall structures. Management involves rigorous sanitation and isolation of affected plants. Systemic acaricides are the primary chemical control; however, because the mites are highly persistent, regular and alternating applications of different chemical classes are required to manage outbreaks and prevent pesticide resistance.
