Description

Systematic position: The honey locust mite (Aculops gleditsiae) belongs to the order Acariformes and the family Eriophyidae. These are microscopic, worm-like mites that are specialized herbivores, causing significant damage primarily to the honey locust tree (Gleditsia triacanthos).

Host plants: This mite is a host-specific pest restricted almost exclusively to the Gleditsia genus. It is particularly problematic in landscape plantings, nurseries, and urban environments where honey locust trees are commonly used as decorative elements due to their aesthetic appeal.

Biology and life cycle: Adult females overwinter in protected sites such as bark crevices or near bud scales. As the buds break in the spring, the mites emerge and move to the young developing leaflets to feed. They undergo multiple generations throughout the growing season, and their population can increase exponentially if environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature, are favorable.

Nature of damage and harm: The feeding activity of these mites triggers the formation of galls — abnormal tissue growths on the leaves. As the infestation progresses, leaves become curled, distorted, and develop yellow or reddish spotting. Severe infestations cause premature leaf drop and can lead to stunted growth, reducing the overall vitality and visual quality of the tree.
