Citrus rust mite

Systematic position. The citrus rust mite (Aculops knorri) belongs to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae (gall mites). These are microscopic pests characterized by their elongated bodies and limited locomotive ability, making them primarily dependent on wind and plant-to-plant contact for dispersal within citrus orchards.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this mite are species within the genus Citrus. Among the most susceptible crops are lemons, oranges, and grapefruit. The mites prefer the green surfaces of developing fruits, though they can also be found on tender green shoots and young leaves during periods of high population density.

Biology and life cycle. Aculops knorri undergoes a rapid life cycle consisting of an egg, two nymphal stages, and an adult phase. The duration of the cycle is temperature-dependent, with warmer weather significantly accelerating development. Multiple overlapping generations occur throughout the growing season, allowing populations to surge rapidly in the absence of predators or chemical interventions.

Damage and economic impact. The feeding activity of the mites involves piercing epidermal cells and extracting the sap. This leads to the destruction of surface cells, resulting in a brown or bronze-colored "rust" on the fruit skin. While the internal quality of the fruit is often unaffected, the aesthetic damage significantly devalues the crop, often leading to total rejection for the fresh market.

Protection measures. Managing citrus rust mite requires a systematic approach to orchard hygiene and chemical control:

• Regular monitoring of fruit populations using a hand lens during the fruit expansion stage.
• Application of specialized acaricides when economic threshold levels are reached.
• Maintaining proper orchard thinning to ensure better spray coverage and airflow.
• Encouraging natural predators, such as phytoseiid mites, which can suppress populations in integrated pest management programs.
