Description
The tomato russet mite (Aculops lycopersici) is a destructive pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae. These microscopic mites are notoriously difficult to detect due to their tiny size and habit of dwelling in cracks and crevices of plant tissues, often causing significant economic damage before they are identified.
The primary hosts of this mite are plants in the Solanaceae family, specifically tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. In commercial greenhouse production, this mite can be particularly devastating, as the controlled environment provides ideal conditions for rapid population growth throughout the year.
The life cycle of the tomato russet mite is temperature-dependent. At optimal temperatures of 25°C to 27°C, the life cycle from egg to adult can be completed in less than a week. This explosive reproductive potential allows infestations to escalate rapidly, spreading through wind currents, farm machinery, and worker movement.
Damage typically manifests from the base of the plant upward. The mites feed by piercing cells, which causes the surface of the leaves and stems to turn a characteristic metallic bronze or "russet" color. Eventually, the foliage curls, withers, and turns brown, leading to plant death. Fruits may also show surface cracks or scarring, significantly reducing their market value.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Cultural practices include removing weeds such as nightshade, strict sanitation within the greenhouse, and avoiding the movement of equipment from infested areas to clean ones. Chemical control involves the application of specific miticides, though it is crucial to rotate products with different modes of action to delay the development of resistance.
