Description
The citrus rust mite (Aculops pelekassi) is a member of the Eriophyidae family. It is a tiny, microscopic pest that is invisible to the naked eye. Despite its small size, it is recognized as a significant threat to citrus production worldwide, causing aesthetic and commercial damage to fruit and foliage.
Citrus trees, including oranges, mandarins, and lemons, are the primary hosts for this pest. The mites feed primarily on the epidermal cells of the fruit rind and the surface of leaves, causing significant physiological stress to the tree and reducing the fruit's overall quality and market value.
The biological cycle of this mite is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly heat and humidity. In warm weather, the reproduction rate is extremely high, allowing the population to reach damaging levels in a very short period. The mites overwinter in protected areas on the plant, such as buds or remaining leaves.
The most distinctive sign of infestation is "rusting" on the fruit surface. The affected areas turn a dull brown, bronze, or metallic silver color due to the destruction of the oil glands in the peel. In addition to fruit damage, heavy infestations can cause leaf curling and early defoliation, which stunts tree growth.
Management strategies require careful observation and timely intervention. Relying solely on chemical controls is not recommended, and integrated pest management is preferred.
