Aculops unguiculatus is a minute pest classified within the order Acariformes and the family Eriophyidae, commonly known as gall mites. This specific species primarily targets woody plants, demonstrating a strong host preference for trees within the genus Robinia, most notably the black locust.
The primary habitat for this mite is the leaf tissue of its host plant. Due to their microscopic stature, these mites are seldom visible to the naked eye, meaning they often go unnoticed until their feeding activities result in visible structural changes to the foliage of the affected trees.
The biological cycle of the mite is synchronized with the phenology of the host tree. They typically overwinter as adults within protected niches such as bark crevices or beneath bud scales.
