Rust mite

The genus Aculus belongs to the family Eriophyidae, commonly known as rust mites or gall mites. Unlike most other mites, these pests possess only four legs and have a distinct worm-like, elongated body structure. Due to their microscopic size, they are rarely seen by the naked eye, often remaining undetected until significant damage to the host plant occurs.

These mites infest a variety of agricultural crops, including tomatoes, apples, plums, and various ornamental plants. They tend to colonize the epidermis of leaves, stems, and fruits. By piercing the plant cells and extracting the sap, they disrupt the photosynthetic activity and normal growth patterns of the affected plant parts.

The biological cycle of Aculus is characterized by rapid development, especially in warm and dry conditions. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis, and populations can explode within a few weeks during the peak growing season. Overwintering occurs in sheltered areas such as dormant buds, bark crevices, or protected plant debris, allowing them to emerge as soon as spring temperatures rise.

The damage caused by these mites is distinctive. Infested areas often turn a rusty brown or bronze color, known as "russeting." Leaves may curl or become distorted, and fruit quality significantly declines, often appearing scarred or stunted. In severe infestations, the mites can cause premature leaf drop and the complete collapse of young shoots, leading to substantial yield losses.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for Aculus includes several key strategies:

• Regular monitoring of crop leaves and shoots for early signs of discoloration.
• Applying targeted acaricides when pest thresholds are exceeded.
• Sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying infested plant material immediately.
• Utilizing natural predators, such as predatory mites (e.g., Phytoseiidae family), to manage populations.
• Ensuring proper irrigation and fertilization to minimize plant susceptibility to mite attacks.
