Crassula mite

Aculus crassulae is a microscopic pest belonging to the family Eriophyidae within the order Acariformes. It is a highly specialized mite that primarily targets members of the Crassulaceae family, particularly Crassula plants. Its presence often goes unnoticed until the damage to the host plant becomes visually significant.

The pest lives and feeds on the succulent tissues of its host. By piercing the plant cells in sensitive areas such as growth points, leaf axils, and young sprouts, the mite extracts vital nutrients. This feeding process directly interferes with the plant's metabolic activities and overall growth stability.

The biology of Aculus crassulae is characterized by rapid reproduction rates under warm, dry conditions, which are common in indoor collections or greenhouses. The life cycle comprises egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Because of their tiny size, these mites can easily spread between plants via contact or environmental factors, making early detection a primary challenge.

The damage caused by these mites is distinctive. Infested areas typically show signs of corky or russeted patches, irregular leaf development, and stunted shoot growth. Over time, the affected plant loses its aesthetic value, becomes weakened, and may succumb to secondary infections caused by the entry of pathogens into the mite-damaged tissues.

Effective management requires a strategic approach since standard contact insecticides are often ineffective against eriophyid mites:

• Utilize systemic acaricides that penetrate plant tissues to target hidden colonies.
• Maintain strict quarantine protocols for any new plants introduced to the collection.
• Regularly monitor the health of succulents using a high-magnification lens.
• Remove and safely dispose of heavily infested plant parts to reduce the pest population.
• Ensure proper spacing and ventilation to modify the microclimate to be less favorable for mites.
