Description

The olive leaf mite (Aculus olearius) is a minute pest classified within the family Eriophyidae (gall mites), order Acari. These mites possess an elongated, vermiform body which is yellowish-white in color. Due to their microscopic size, they are typically detected only after symptoms of infestation become clearly visible on the foliage.

The primary host plant for this mite is the olive tree (Olea europaea). The mites colonize the leaves, developing shoots, and inflorescences. In commercial olive groves, this species can cause widespread stress across the trees, particularly affecting young, vigorous growth that is essential for long-term canopy development.

The life cycle of Aculus olearius is closely linked to the tree's phenology. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage, typically sheltered within leaf axils or under bark scales. As temperatures rise in spring, the mites emerge to feed and begin oviposition. Given favorable climatic conditions, multiple generations can occur during the growing season.

The damage caused by these mites manifests as leaf curling, discoloration, and a characteristic silvery appearance of the foliage. Infested leaves may drop prematurely, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity. When the mites attack the inflorescences, they often cause flower drop or deformation, which directly impacts fruit set and overall yield quality.

Integrated pest management strategies include:

  • Monitoring olive orchards regularly, especially during the spring bud-burst phase.
  • Applying selective acaricides when mite populations reach established economic thresholds.
  • Implementing proper pruning practices to improve spray penetration and canopy aeration.
  • Encouraging the presence of natural predators, such as phytoseiid mites, which can suppress populations effectively.
