Clover gall mite

Taxonomic classification. The clover gall mite (Aculus trifolii) is a member of the class Arachnida, order Trombidiformes, and family Eriophyidae. These mites are microscopic and distinct from other species due to their elongated, worm-like body shape and the presence of only two pairs of legs, which are situated near the front of the body.

Host plants and damage symptoms. This mite species is a specialized pest that exclusively affects clover species (Trifolium). Feeding activities trigger the plant to develop galls—abnormal tissue growths. These infestations lead to severe curling, deformation of leaves, and distortion of flower heads, which prevents normal development of the plant organs.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Aculus trifolii is intrinsically linked to the growing season of the host plant. Mites reside and reproduce inside the galls, which provide a protected environment against predators and weather fluctuations. Multiple generations occur throughout the summer, allowing the population to reach high densities rapidly if environmental conditions are favorable.

Economic impact. The infestation results in significant yield losses in forage production. Affected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced vigor, and lower nutritional quality, which compromises their value as livestock feed. Furthermore, persistent gall formation hampers the photosynthetic capacity of the clover, often leading to premature plant senescence.

Control measures. Managing the clover gall mite requires an integrated approach to reduce population levels:

• Implementing crop rotation to break the cycle of mite infestation.
• Removing volunteer clover plants and weeds that act as alternative hosts.
• Strict adherence to sanitation protocols for machinery moving between fields.
• Applying acaricides specifically during the periods of peak mite migration, though this is often difficult due to the mites' protected position within galls.
