Host plants. The pest is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plant hosts. It primarily targets fruit trees, including apples, pears, peaches, and plums. Beyond fruit orchards, it can also be found on various deciduous trees and shrubs, which serve as reservoirs for the pest when primary hosts are not available or are treated with pesticides.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle typically involves several generations per year. Overwintering occurs as young larvae, which seek shelter in bark crevices or at the base of buds within protective silk cocoons. As temperatures rise in the spring, larvae emerge to begin feeding on developing foliage and emerging buds, marking the start of the infestation period.

Damage and pest status. Larvae are the primary cause of damage. They feed on leaves, often rolling them into characteristic tubes or clusters held together by silk webbing. This behavior provides protection from natural predators and chemical sprays. Severe infestations lead to significant defoliation, damage to blossoms, and scarring of fruit, which directly reduces both quality and yield.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Cultural practices such as orchard sanitation, removal of infested plant parts, and bark cleaning help reduce overwintering populations.
