Tea tortrix

The Tea tortrix (scientific name: Adoxophyes fasciata) is a destructive insect species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This pest is a significant threat to commercial tea plantations, where its larvae feed on tender leaves and buds, leading to substantial economic losses in both yield and quality of the final product.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it can infest a wide range of host plants beyond tea, such as citrus and various ornamental shrubs. Its adaptability allows the population to thrive in diverse environments, making it a persistent challenge for integrated pest management (IPM) programs in tropical and subtropical regions.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Throughout the growing season, multiple overlapping generations can occur, depending on temperature and humidity levels. This continuous presence makes it difficult to time interventions accurately, as different developmental stages of the insect may be present simultaneously.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which web together young leaves and terminal shoots to form protective shelters. Inside these structures, they consume the leaf tissue, leading to stunted growth, leaf deformation, and reduced photosynthetic efficiency. In severe cases of infestation, the plants' general vigor is significantly impaired.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted strategy to keep populations below economic injury levels:

• Regular field scouting and the use of sex pheromone traps for monitoring.
• Application of biological control agents, including natural predators and parasitoids.
• Targeted use of selective insecticides during the peak periods of larval emergence.
